Questo articolo presenta una metodologia riabilitativa a base musicoterapica, prefigurato in modo tale da sollecitare in anziani con deficit intellettivi gravi la graduale riappropriazione di funzioni mentali di base attraverso la stimolazione di distinte operazioni. Una prima fase preliminare ha permesso di specificare gli obiettivi e di raccogliere indicazioni circa le piu opportune modalita per avviarlo. Si sono successivamente individuate le pazienti effettivamente idonee all'intervento, restringendo la numerosita del gruppo con cui condurre le successive sedute. Inoltre e stato possibile stabilire le modalita piu efficaci per le sedute musicoterapeutiche con pazienti geriatrici. Una seconda parte del percorso, svoltosi con un gruppo piu ristretto di pazienti con un livello medio di funzionalita intellettiva superiore ha permesso di mettere a punto una nuova serie di schede di lavoro relative ad esercizi sonori volti alla riattivazione di operazioni cognitive complesse, richiedenti un carico di memoria maggiore rispetto a quelli precedentemente proposti e una piu profonda elaborazione concettuale. Il training e stato poi validato, e i dati emersi hanno permesso di precisare le condizioni che rendono possibile l'attivazione delle sedute di musicoterapia, le modalita piu efficaci per condurle, l'impatto che esse hanno sul personale e sull'organizzazione degli istituti, la formazione necessaria per gli operatori coinvolti. Dati prevalentemente qualitativi hanno inoltre fornito riscontri positivi circa la disponibilita, l'interesse e la partecipazione degli anziani a tale tipo di iniziativa.
