The linear model of production and consumption in recent decades has led to a large amount of manufactured and discarded clothes in Bulgaria and around the world. To address the environmental, climatic and social negative effects inflicted by the textile industry on the environment, as well as to preserve resources, water, land and people, the sewing industry must move to a circular model of production and consumption. The circular economy is a model of economical use of resources in the process of production and minimisation of waste in consumption. In this study an analysis of the sewing industry in Bulgaria, which represents a significant part of the textile industry, in the context of a pandemic was done. The possibilities for an accelerated transition to a circular economy in response to European directives were considered. The many challenges facing the fashion industry are taken into account.
